We can’t avoid it – we will get older, and whilst we welcome the wisdom and experience that comes with age, there’s something else we are not too keen on – developing those wrinkles and fine lines. Whilst all of us will develop it sooner or later, remember that your skin is the largest organ in your body – and it will change over time. So what you can do to adjust to these changes is to modify your skincare routine to reflect these changes. In other words, when you were younger, you seemed to have no problem with your skin, and getting a tan was wonderful! But as you get older, things change – and your skin changes most of all. But there are things you can do to stop the trend – and with these top tips, you can have better, more youthful-looking skin as you age.
- Choose a gentler facial wash
One of the first things you can do to take care of your skin and adjust is to choose a gentler facial wash. As you get older, your skin will likely become more sensitive and will not be as oily as when you were younger. So if your skin is prone to breakouts every so often, look for a facial wash which is gentler and milder on the skin.
And when you wash your face, be gentle with your facial movements. For example, massage your face and use circular movements – avoid aggressive and lengthy scrubbing – this could very well irritate your delicate skin and even lead to premature ageing.
- Begin using retinoids
As we age, our skin loses collagen, a protein that makes it look lifted and smooth. When people lose collagen, this can make their faces look creased and sullen. Many experts say that the best way to combat this is to use a stronger version of vitamin A – a retinoid. You can use a retinoid cream two or three times per week and adjust it to a nightly routine once your skin gets used to it.

Opt for protein-rich foods, such as lean meats, fish, legumes, and beans to help develop collagen, and stick to foods loaded with vitamin C to boost your immunity and give your skin a youthful glow.
One underrated super-food filled with antioxidants is tomatoes, especially cooked ones. Tomato sauce, in particular, has plenty of lycopene, an antioxidant that helps protect the skin against sun damage and sunburn.
There are other tips you can do to have more youthful-looking skin – you can add supplements to your diet (Omega-3, in particular, is highly useful), and you can also start exfoliating your skin every week to get rid of dead skin cells.
