Recover Quickly From a Cold

Having the cold is not pleasant and can leave you feeling drained and miserable. All of us will catch colds at some point, but that doesn’t mean you should have to suffer. There are many ways you can ease the symptoms of the cold, as well as boost your immune system to help you recover. So, how can you get over a cold quickly?

Steam

Introducing moisture to the air is an effective way to relieve cold symptoms. A humidifier or cold-mist vaporizer placed in your home can help moisten the air, but to really ease nasal congestion, you’ll want to inhale warm steam. You can do this by taking a hot bath or shower or by giving yourself a homemade steam facial. Simply pour boiling water into a sink or container, then add a few drops of a refreshing antibacterial essential oil, such as peppermint. Lower your face until your nose is almost touching the water and then enclose your entire head and face with a towel. Breath the resulting steam through your nose and enjoy the soothing release as the congestion drains away.

Hot drinks

Sipping warm liquids when you’re suffering from a cold isn’t just soothing and relaxing, it can help keep you hydrated. Your body needs fluids to function, and this is even more important when it’s fighting off illness. Drinking warm liquids such as herbal teas, lemon water, and fruit juices will keep your fluid levels up whilst also providing you with vitamin C. Chicken soup or vegetable broth are also ideal as they can replenish fluids while adding much-needed sustenance. Try to avoid drinks containing alcohol and caffeine as these can dehydrate you and dehydration will negatively affect your immune system

Medicate

While you can’t cure the common cold, there are plenty of medical remedies you can buy over the counter that will at least ease your symptoms. Nasal decongestants can relieve stuffiness and help you breath more easily, as can throat lozenges. Simple painkillers like paracetamol can help with aches and fevers; whilst over the counter antihistamines can help reduce sniffing and sneezing.

Get your vitamins

You might not feel like eating when you’re choked up with the cold, but you need to make sure you get all the important nutrients to help you recover. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and ensure you take in enough calories to keep your energy levels up. Nestle BOOST Optimum contains probiotics, prebiotics, and B vitamins, which all help to boost your immune system.

Rest

You might want to get on with things, but don’t forget that your body needs rest in order to heal. It’s therefore important that you take it easy and give your body the time it needs to recover. When you’re suffering from the cold, your body is working extra hard to fight off the infection, so make sure you priorities resting until you feel better. Your body uses sleep to repair itself, so ensure you get plenty of sleep to give your immune system the best chance of working efficiently.

Conclusion

While there is no magic cure to get rid of a cold, there are measures you can take to ease your symptoms and help you recover faster.
